This is a reference to an incident in 1888. Van Gogh suffered from mental illnees. He cut off part of his left earlobe with a razor when he thought his friend Paul Gaugin was about to desert him. Van Gogh then wrapped the piece of ear and gave it to a prostitute for safe keeping.
