My mother used to deliver “Simmer down!” to others when it was SHE who was all simmered up.
Telling an irate person to calm down is worse than pouring gasoline on a blazing fire. Very offensive, minimizing and opens a can of worms that NObody can return since there won’t be anybody around to try.
