Elly: I trust you, April. It's just that ever since grandpa moved out, I haven't felt comfortable about you being home alone. April: What about Ed' an' Dixie! Who's gonna let them out? Who's gonna play with Butterscotch?!! Elly: I've made arrangements for them to be looked after. April: Why can't I go to Becky's house?! Did before! Elly: Becky's mom has been very kind, but this is something we have to deal with - I'll make arrangements for you to get off the school bus in town, and you can walk to the store. April: What am I gonna do until 5:30? Work?!! April: ....oh.
12 is old enough to be left home alone, after school. However, if Elly is prepared to pay her, I can see having her come work at the store.
