Well, she IS used to John going on & on about nothing…

I’d change that last panel to read: “No wonder the house is a mess and dinner isn’t ready…”

It would probably have the same outcome… :-)

Strange how any panel indicating a form of spousal abuse is always with Elly being the violent one…

John on the other hand had several patients with severe cases of halitosis and other attractive features. However, at least he gets payment, most of the time.

You’re looking a bit malnourished in the last panel, John. C’mon Elly, I learned a while ago that you’re just setting him up by saying that.

Hmmmm, our sweet little Elly is being a bit on the mean side today. Talking about “nothing”? Cruel, Elly, cruel thing to say. (I’ve been told that I talk about nothing, can you tell? : )

so it’s a laugh-riot when elly concusses john with a hot cup of coffee, because he ‘deserved’ it?

if he throws something at elly he’s an abusive husband who should be locked up.

@billdi and fbjsr — You are so right. It’s gotten to where a male cannot even raise his voice. No matter what the provacation. I’m not advocating a return to the “dark ages”, but surely there must come a day when fair is really fair.

Well, this was written when cartoon violence was a lot more acceptable. And it is a cartoon.

How long does John have to be married to Elly before he finally figures out that she can’t take a joke?!?!?

Having said that, I can kind of see her point (minus throwing the coffee cup, of course!). She was talking to her husband seriously about her day. But instead of sympathizing and agreeing that, yes, Mrs. Baird does have an annoying way of droning on and on, non-stop, about any and everything she can think of, all he could muster was a wise-crack at Elly’s expense, which probably made her feel silly and stupid. Things like that tend to hack people off – especially women – because it has a way of making us feel like our husbands/significant others don’t take us seriously. And if they don’t take us seriously, then how can they possibly respect us?

I think his point was the she should be able to take it because she dishes it out.

And I think she sussed him out.

Duck, John!

Evidently, Elly can’t “handle” it - she’s throwing away the handle - with the cup still attached.
