The part that struck me about this one is that the other lady is older. I think that some older people (and stay-at-home moms) just get so lonely sometimes and need someone to talk to. There are times when I call my mom to ask her one question, and 2 hours later, I’ve heard all about the difficult time at the drug store and the amount of leaves that have fallen on her yard and her latest update from the doctor, but still haven’t asked my question. I totally understand though, and am fine with listening.
eatin’up - My mom & I used to have daily phone conversations like that. The main purpose was to make sure my parents were okay, and not needing help. (They lived in a farm house that had been broken into more than once.) But I enjoyed the mentoring I got from my mom as I got married and had kids. She would tell me what was of interest to her, too.
I’m so thankful for those phone calls and the weekly visits we made to my parents while they were still living.
eatin’up, your are so right!! I used to work in a long term care facility and “just listening” to both patient and family was a most important part of the job. Still is on this side of retirement…
I’m really glad when friends even seem to be interested in all the stuf I’m doing- even better, I now belong to a group who share many of my interests and so many are my friends on Facebook. Many relatives also want to be friends there, but unless they acually SHARE my interests, I’d rather ignore them.

Ramp that up for the common prairie-dog office cubicle farm and multiple rumor-mongers and … where did the day go?

That’s OK, Elly. She didn’t expect, or even want you, to listen; she just wanted to talk. And wouldn’t LET you respoond.

I tend to go into my own little world when people start talking

A good confidant listens to your issues. A brilliant conversationalist encourages you to talk about yourself.
