And besides, if they were not pressurized, no animal would survive above about 15,000 feet. Planes that do not pressurize their cargo compartment do not accept live cargo.
Jan: Quite true, I was trying to back-date to the setting. Nowadays they fly at 30-33,000 feet. I have a model I did of a Trans-Canada Airways (now Air Canada) Lancastrian, still in WW-II colours. This was an airliner coversion of an Avro Lancaster bomber. With four Rolls Royce Merlin engines, cotton was standard issue to protect ears. The setting is a bit later, but it was pre-Fat Albert (747s)
