It is interesting the way Elly describes her situation. She tells Connie only that she “wants” to scream. However, we know from last week that Elly actually does scream and it’s not a little, quiet scream either. It’s the kind of scream that makes John run to see what happened. Elly may be afraid that Connie will think she is a whackadoodle if she tells the truth about the screaming. Elly may not realize that since Connie lives next door to her, she may be already completely aware of Elly’s screaming.
It’s Elly’s house. Mike’s room is in Elly and John’s house. If he doesn’t clean it up it could be a fire hazard depending on what’s in there. If he has old food it’ll stink which could permeate to the rest of the house, not to mention destroying the carpet and creating sickness when he breathes it in (but doesn’t smell it because he’s used to it). I say let him keep his apartment someday how he pleases but since the room is in their house he needs to clean it up or let Elly do it. When that happens she may dispose of things he wants to keep but he takes his chances.
Lynn’s Notes:As I recall, I, too, left my room in an unruly mess. Thing is, in those days, there were some pretty harsh punishments, and I had to decide if going against the matriarch was worth the risk!
Maybe because Mike is a kid he doesn’t really know how to clean his room. Maybe he feels overwhelmed by the mess. Maybe he has too much stuff and no real place to put it. Maybe if she gave him just one task to do each day he could begin to make some progress and learn to keep it clean.

If adults complain about kids since time began, then what was the deal with the “Greatest Generation”?

Tell them to keep the door closed. It worked for me. Out of sight, out of mind.
