When our kids were small I had to break my spouse of the habit of imposing punishments on them that were actually punishing me. One Saturday when he decreed they couldn’t go to a friend’s house as planned, and had to stay home and do chores, I skipped town and he had to stay home and supervise. I recall the punishment was lifted by lunch.
