Andy: Roger's takin your bags upstairs. You'll be staying in Peter's room. Grandma: Oh, no- that's too much trouble. I can't bump my own grandson out of his bedroom for two weeks! I'll sleep down here on the couch. The last thing I want to be is a bother. Andy: Mother, I have broken my back for the last three days trying to get a 16-year old's bedroom cleaned up for your arrival. It was not, shall we say, pleasant. You will be sleeping in Peter's room. Grandma: Nonsense. The matter is closed. I refuse to be a nuisance.
Andi's mother reminds me of the patient's mother in C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letter XVII: āIn a crowded restaurant she gives a little scream at the plate which some overworked waitress has set before her and says: āOh, that's far, far too much! Take it away and bring me about a quarter of it.ā If challenged, she would say she was doing this to avoid waste; in reality she does it because the particular shade of gluttony to which we [the devils] have enslaved her is offended by the sight of more food than she happens to want.ā
