MIT actually has a pretty good football team. Caltech doesn’t have one though (picture a team full of Sheldon Coopers). The joke of course is that they hacked the computer rankings in their favor.
I don’t know when this was originally published, but we just had “semi-final” games (Rose and Sugar bowls) and the championship game is on the 12th, so the BCS has changed.

Although MIT may have a pretty good football team now, Caltech beat them in the 1984 Rose Bowl Scoreboard 38-9:
