Frazz by Jef Mallett for July 08, 2012
Transcript:
Boy: Cell phones are ruining adventure. Where's the risk if you can just dial up a rescue? But maybe that encourages more adventure because it lets you control your risk. Which is kind of the opposite of adventure. Maybe they just give you more control over who rescues you. Frazz: Let's go with that and get you down before your mom calls the fire department.

A cellphone as moral hazard?

Fine, have it your way. Turn the phone off and yell at the top of your lungs, hoping, wishing someone will hear you, just like the good ol’ days. One other device that makes me a much more gutsy explorer is GPS. No matter where you go, you can find your way back. Except for that one time my GPS died — and there’s your adventure right there!

People think that wilderness, true wilderness, is equivalent to a ticket to Disney World. They will do the most foolish things because they have a cell phone. It never occurs to them that rescues cost time, money, risk, and effort (often from ordinary people) that is never repaid. I’ve been involved in this kind of rescue twice, and since then there have been more and more of them. Ridiculous.

I have often said: “Cell phones are great at keeping you connected to everybody…except the people you are ACTUALLY WITH!”You can quote me on that.
