Caulfield: Did high-school football season always start this early? Frazz: I don't think so. Caulfield: What happened? Frazz: Probably adding playoffs. Caulfield: I thought maybe to let the wide receivers heal up in time for basketball season. Frazz: Five yards for gratuitous pointy-outing!

I’m not sure I get it either, but I can say that highschool football season in the 70s started this early.

What?

It happens at our high school. A number of the football players are on the basketball team. Since the sports’ seasons overlap, the football kids always miss the first part of basketball season.

Looks like a teenage Calvin and like most teenagers, he’s just not funny anymore. But then, Calvin wouldn’t have been funny without Hobbes anyway.

In Michigan (where Frazz takes place), public schools are not allowed to start before Labor Day, but most high school football teams have already played their third game. Sure, there use to be practices and scrimages in the summer, but you didn’t have real games until school started.
Caufield is comes up with a cynical explanation, and Frazz gently chides him for it.

Hey, when I was in school our sports teams were awful. If you weren’t there to learn, you weren’t there for anything.
