@Fairportfan2There’s a yellow one on the top row with the text “great cartoonist”. That might be Mr Thompson’s match.

Two generations? …hmmmm….
Why do grandparents and grandchildren love each other..?
They have a common enemy …..

Richard Thompson is a singer/songwriter, so the match has to be “Great Singer.” And now we know Mallett is a fan.

If my cousin Leslie reads this strip she’ll find her name.

Since the hearts don’t have to match evenly, Richard Thompson could be both singer and cartoonist.

“Richard Thompson” matches up with either “Great Cartoonist” or “Great Singer,” which I think is part of the point.

Not going to bother matching the hearts. Too difficult.

Mrs. O’Leary’s cow did not start the great Chicago fire.

“Big One” may refer to either “San Francisco Earthquake” or to “Little Boy” (which was the nickname of the Big One we dropped on Hiroshima).
“Monty Python” matches up with either “Anaconda” or “Footlights” (the Cambridge University dramatic society to which Eric Idle, John Cleese, and Graham Chapman belonged).
As has been suggested above (and as is hinted at in the strip itself), there need NOT be a one-to-one correlation between the hearts on the left and the hearts on the right.

Here’s my shot at this – Still have two blue missing (don’t match up, I guess?)

Here’s my shot at it. Some are pretty obtuse, but perfecshon is never fun. Hey, Colours and Rihanna could match with Donovan and Black and Blue.
1906 – SF quake1907 – PrimeA Man A Plan – PanamaZatopek – Czech locomotive (running because it’s fun is a loco motive to me)Mrs. O’Leary’s cow – ChicagoBig One – ErieMona Lisa – La G.Richard Thompson – singerMonty Python – Footlights. The anaconda ate a red herring.Sam I am – cartoonistLittle one – alimentary (my dear Watson)Nurmi – checks ….Gerald Ford – Leslie KingWhistler’s Mother – Study No. 1 (can’t think of who did it, though.)All of the above – I see no heart answer here. I think that since it’s at the bottom of the pile of hearts, JM is telling us that he loves all of the hearts above, from 1906 to Whistler’s mama. Thanks, JM. May Frazz be “long running”.

While I do not understand why (and I did enjoy the strip enough to have Cul de Sac in my small set of online comic strips for a few years), Richard Thompson is held in especially highly regard by a large set of cartoonists. So I vote for that pair (and still enjoy the memory of Fairport Convention).

I adore both Richard Thompsons, but I’m not sure i’d call the musical one a great singer. Great guitarist, great songwriter, great entertainer….
