Dieting could be eating different foods (although, I found it easier to stick with a diet that let me eat what I like, just less of it.) However, if one is to stop smoking, that would definitely be NOT doing something. I suppose those people usually do something else instead, which is why many of them gain weight.

Don’t know if it was Norman Vincent Peale or some neuro/psycho/person who determined that the brain doesn’t recognize the negative. If you say you will not do something, the brain “hears” only that you will do something and tries to help you do that thing. A good thing for parents, teachers and animal trainers to know. Use only positive statements if you want to accomplish a goal.

Ah, Doh, what a wonderful word is “should.” Kind of negates the rest of your statement. Now please tell us all about “a normal brain.”

What is a more common resolution, “I am going to go on a diet”, or “I am going to lose weight”? The difference between the two is that losing weight usually has two sides to it, 1, eating better, and 2, working out. Of the comments mentioned, I did not see much of the 2nd step, working out to maintain a healthy body. The waist size mentioned did not come about by eating properly. A little exercise goes a long way. I resolve to exercise and eat better. Two things that require action.
