You are being prepared to accept less rights than are yours, to not fight when they want to search you without a warrant. To be familiar with living in an extended prison.

OK. Another montessori plug: there are passes for bathroom/water fountain use. The larger the class, the larger the number of passes, but there’s always at least one each for boys and girls. Children get up from their independent work and take an available pass, and do what they have to do. Even in my daughter’s urban public “compromised” montessori (read: lots of poor kids that many seem to think “boot camp” style schools are the answer for) they start this at 5 years old, sometimes 4..Btw, “compromised” because, being a public school, they must still standardized test the kids starting in k4. This involves computers, and a certain method of presenting the material, BOTH of which are TOTALLY foreign to the “montessori way”.

Somewhere out there in the netosphere is a copy of a great single frame comic from several years ago — a middle school aged student going down the hall with a huge sign reading “I’m missing vital classroom instruction time because I have to tinkle.”

Getting her prepared for work in a call center. I used to work in one doing tech support. Every minute of the day has to be accounted for. It can be rewarding work, if you can get past the whole “Big Brother is watching” aspect of the job. I still work for the same place, but now I am “Big Brother”

I’m disappointed. I was sure Mallet would have had some Star Trek reference today.

    Happy 50 Capt. Kirk!

Wait until you have to get a job and stand at a machine that you can’t leave.

My first grade classroom had en suite boys and girls rooms — you didn’t ask, you just went. However my first visit coincided with our first fire drill. Mrs. Smith pulled me out of the boys room while I was still peeing! I never asked to use a washroom for the rest of my schooling!

There’s another group who has to ask permission to pee: Anyone who has the label “Fall Risk” emblazoned on their record and is imprisoned in a hospital, rehab center, or nursing home. And they put tattlers on you that buzz loudly if you try to go it alone.
