Same place all modern commercial non-annual fruit comes from: there was one tree, bush, vine, whatever somewhere that had the desired characteristics and they graft buds from that plant onto root stock of other varieties. Doesn’t work for strawberries, etc, or to wild fruits, but all apples, grapes, oranges, pears, etc etc that you can buy in a nursery are produced this way.
I’m not a big believer in simple solutions to complex problems. Oh, I love the idea, but I lack faith to the point of suspicion. So I’m vulnerable to missing out on the obvious.
Which, “hit hard and hit first” is one of those truisms that’s so obvious it looks suspiciously like a simple solution. And in the movies and Marvel comics, I suppose it is. But real street fights are about as complicated as it gets, as that first punch rarely ends the fight. And you really don’t want it to, because a punch that effective is not without its own side effects and complications. As soon as the fight ends, the criminal charges and civil lawsuits begin.
I don’t have a lot of experience with street fighting, which is already an exaggeration. “Not a lot” is substantially more than “zippo.” I may be a coward with my fists, but I’ll talk to anyone I find interesting, and I’ve met a few interesting people with some experience in brawling. And you know what 100% of them did not say?: “Hit hard and hit first.” What they all did say was to avoid the fight at all costs. Talk your way out of it. Run if you have to. Swallow your pride. No one cares.
Egos are for writers. As are phrases like “hit hard and hit first.”
