Now you can color me baffled.

Then again, considering Caulfield’s parting words in panel 4….

maybe today’s strip isn’t the whole of The Big Reveal…

and this one day of school will take several days of strips to develop.

Will he sleep through this morning’s classes, in tomorrow’s strip…

and claim that it’s part of his costume?

And then in Thursday’s strip, pretend to awaken, with a fake beard…..

and pretend that he doesn’t recognise anybody,

and that he doesn’t remember anything about a quiz….

or about having been assigned any homework for Halloween day ?

BTW… in answer to a few posts yesterday…

    Caulfield already did “Catch 22”.

    I don’t remember what year…

and he was not Yossarian, but instead, the dead guy (lieutenant?) in Yossarian’s tent.

That could also be sort of a reply to the person who said Caulfield wouldn’t be Watson,

which indeed, he isn’t… but NOT because he’s always a main character.

In fact, for one of the only other Halloween ones I remember, “One Flew Over the Cuckooo’s Nest,”

he was not McMurphy, but the big, silent Indian chief who admires McMurphy and narrates the story…

which is a rather Watson-like element of his role, I think.

All moot anyway, since he’s Rip Van Winkle,

Could ‘later’ be Caulfield’s intro to adult life 20 years from today?

later it be Caulfield sleeping in class and waking up with beard. Test was that boring

All this time I thought Rip Van Winkle was just a figure of folktales, but apparently he was written by Washington Irving. Guess I learned something today.

I still think the big quiz is what life presents to a new adult, just out of the cocoon of family life. That’s Caulfield’s next challenge, as it was with each of us.

Sorry for not making you guess all week this time. With Halloween being early in the week, I took a little different approach. I’ll keep it going a while, though. And don’t worry — You’ll get plenty of chances in the future to try and figure out just what I’m getting at with a strip or a theme. Happens to me all the time.
