I did a race once that was as many times around a one mile course as you could do in 24 hrs. It was surprisingly not repetitive! The course goes around a church, through a forest, across a field of ankle deep mud, down a gravel road, through a playground… between the varied scenery, the novelty of running in different lighting conditions, and the ever changing company as different people stopped to eat and rest and jumped back in, I never got bored. My husband and I figured we would bang out a half marathon, which was about all we had trained for, and call it a day. But the infectious energy and the fun of running in darkness kept us coming back until we finished a marathon, then once we did that we figured we might as well take a nap in the car then stagger onward a few more miles to 50k. Ended up feeling pretty good about our effort, then found out at the breakfast banquet that the winner in my (kinda over the hill female) age group did 72 miles! The overall winner did something like 120. We passed her one go round eating an entire spaghetti dinner while taking a walk break!
