A little Smiley face trivia: Harvey Ball, the man who first invented the smiley face in 1963, never profited from it. He sold the design, which took him all of 10 minutes to create, for $45 and never saw any other compensation for it. The smiley face was legally copyrighted for the first time in 1972 by a Frenchman named Franklin Loufrani.
