My feeling might be wrong, but back in the days people became old in much younger years than today. I mean when my great aunt got 90 in the early 1980s she was counted as very old like today people of 100+ years old.
As I’ve mentioned before, there was an episode of Scooby Doo which included a sequence showing Scooby still with his human friends when they were in their seventies. Scooby commented, “I’m five hundred and twenty-five in dog years!”

If they both die on the same day, that would be convenient, because people won’t have to figure out what to do with the dog.
