    If I recall my history lessons correctly, that event amounted to significant tax cuts, breaking away from the British Monarchy. A whole slew of taxes were ignored by the colonists after that.

    This strip implies that the Declaration was signed on July 4, 1776. Actually only John Hancock and Charles Thomson signed on the fourth. Then the document went to the printer with copies sent to all the colonies for approval. The rest of the signing didn’t start until August second and took several months to get the last signature.
