Makers of movies produced in the ‘30s and 40’s put emphasis on dialogue intelligibility in their sound tracks. Much dialogue in contemporary movies competes with overpowering background music, a blitz of sound effects (both too loud), and a peculiar penchant for “realist dialect” (read: slurred and mumbled speech) which renders such dialogue nearly unintelligible. Here are two examples: In the first category is 1934’s “The Thin Man”, in the second are “Bladerunner 2049” and “Mad Max, Fury Road”. One refreshing example of a competently produced movie sound track, especially the recorded music, is “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”
