A company I joined in 1999 gave each employee a gift on every fifth anniversary of employment. As your anniversary approached, you’d get a small catalog from which to pick your gift. I made out pretty well in 2004, when I chose a Seiko watch. Twenty-one years later, I still wear it often.
In 2009, for my tenth anniversary, I opted for a cheesy gold ring with the company name (there just wasn’t anything else in the catalog I wanted). That gift was delivered to my home by Fedex, because I’d been laid off a few weeks earlier! But I got the last laugh. In 2015, I was relocating to another state. A little extra cash never hurts in that situation, so I took the ring and sold it to one of those “we buy gold” places.
