I have never seen a woodpecker void its waste while in flight, so I guess Grace is a special exception. But the ground beneath their accustomed places for sitting or feeding is quite fertile. I had a stand of catnip and common mullein beneath a strip of wood on the sides of my house before replacing it with vinyl siding to keep the downy woodpeckers off of it to make new nesting spots for chickadees.
