Elma was always an ornery critter! Since she was a baby, she hated anyone who picked her up and wouldn’t play with the other kids. She’d rather play alone, in her fairytale dreamland and would talk to invisible friends all day long! She became more and more of a recluse, the older she got. The tutor gave up and never came back. Her family didn’t have the heart to put her “away” so they kept her in the attic, away from other humans! One day she was gazing out the window and saw a beautiful butterfly land on the window sill and she somehow snapped out of her dazed world and came alive, came downstairs and began talking about all the places she had gone in her fairytale world. Her family was so shocked and amazed at the transformation…like someone flipped a switch..they encouraged her to finish her education and she excelled in writing…. her first essay was about the beautiful butterfly that had awakened her to the world.
