About Funky Winkerbean
Funky and his friends started as classmates at Westview Jr. High, and, over the years, readers have watched them grow to become adults with children of their own. The cartoonist entertains both teenagers and adults alike. As readers have grown, they’ve seen their own lives mirrored in the lives of Funky’s characters as along the way the strip has tackled important educational and social issues. This has led to a strong reader loyalty as evidenced by the outpouring of emotion when one of the strip’s main characters, Lisa, died of breast cancer, a story for which the strip was recognized by being selected in 2008 as a Pulitzer Prize Finalist.
