One of the greatest myths of American history: The Pilgrims came to the New World in search of religious freedom. They already had that when they moved from England to Leyden, Holland. Unfortunately for them, there were expected to respect everyone else’s religious freedom while they lived there. Which they were not willing to do.
The Pilgrims gave us Massachusetts, or at least the beginnings. Throwing out individuals from the Plymouth Colony for minor doctrinal differences gave us Rhode Island and Connecticut. Pilgrim bigotry remains a guiding principal of America 400 years later.
And COVID-19 killed the 400th anniversary celebration this year. Although a 17th century re-enactor, I did get a feeling of “how fitting.”
