It’s clever how the hostess gets back at Melba without really digging at her at all. This is the best kind of humor, subtle. No one farting or burping or hitting someone else in the face with a pie. Wait a minute, that last one is also good!
My favorite 3 Stooges is the Lady Godiva one, with the mysterious pie thrower. Whenever someone would start to look at the Lady they’d get a pie in the face.
Dypak, I get the classic Phantom from dailyink, but they’ve started to print it very small! By the way, artist Paul Ryan is doing incredible work on the current Phantom.

DYPAK SAID “t’s clever how the hostess gets back at Melba ” It’s not intentional. If it was intentinal, it would be mean, not funny.

Sorry, I’ve gotta disagree. The Hostesses reply was every bit as deliberate a dig as Melba’s comments were. Melba had been picking away with little snide remarks all evening. The poor Hostess finally got tired of it and gave a little back. So called “Society Ladies” are supposed to act like this all the time. Try to catch Kitty Montgomery in action on the Dharma and Greg show sometime, you’ll see the Mistress of Cattiness in action.
Look at that last panel, it’s obviously deliberate. The last panel is drawn to actually show a pause before the Hostess launches her zinger-missle. And the wonderfully drawn look on Melba’s face shows it home! There’s no wind left in those sails.

The “punch” being it is a dig at her for her rude behavior, insinuating that hearing her speak would be an insufferable experience.

Let her give her speech now rather than after they’ve eaten. Otherwise they may find excuses to leave.

Wait a minute, what kind of pie? There’s nothing funny about wasting good pie!

Melbas subtle insult, though unintended as such, was “how did you grow old so gracefully?”

What makes anyone think Melba is smart enough to be subtle. She’s just disingenuous.
