Two days ago, I suggested a storyline in which Nubbin Wallet would be depicted as gay.
Joe Allen Doty responded, “Oh, was the sexual orientation of Nubbin Wallet ever mentioned in this comic strip? Or, OldMountainMan, are you just basing your comments on homophobic stereotypes of gay people?”
In what way was I making a homophobic stereotype? I was just suggesting a new storyline, one that would be more relevant and interesting than Gertie and Bird, Rufus and Joel, or Upton and Ramona Lisa.
It would be great if Gasoline Alley broke new ground by admitting a family member is gay. That would be totally consistent with their depiction as a normal American family.
In 1993, Lynn Johnston had Lawrence Poirier come out in For Better or for Worse. Gasoline Alley should catch up to the times as well. If Scanarelli had Nubbin marry another man, or depicted a same-sex couple, what a great storyline!
