@ORTeka, the story I heard is that a Medieval king decreed that any baker who shorted a customer (well, royal customers anyway) would be executed. Bakers started including an extra just in case they miscounted.
Oddly enough, it seems Jeff is the family name. Othello Jeff. Jeff is the little guy, the Joel of the pair. I think I read that Scancarelli had some connection with Mutt and Jeff— assistant to the cartoonist on it in the 1980s?
