Mom: His name was Karl and he was my first true film teacher...Karl was kind of gruff and cranky, but he knew everything about movies because he had seen them all about a hundred times! Karl: Spielberg?! You're kidding, right? The guy's a manipulator! Kubrick! Mom: Soon I was visiting the movie theater every day and Karl and I became fast friends we'd talk movies for hours and sometimes he'd even let me run the projector or change the bulb! Heart: Sounds thrilling, Mom...Reminds me of that old "The Far Side" cartoon: "Shark nerds always ran the projector." Mom: I don't get it. Next: "Mom's Epiphany"
I think it was just a visual gag. Also, the idea of a little girl becoming best friends with a middle-aged man would not fly today for obvious reasons.
