I live in Salem, Mass, the Halloween Capital of the world. Our Chamber of Commerce would support you, Dean - it would bring seven times the tourists and their tourist dollars!

I’m actually in favor of designating the first week of July as “USA Week”. There would be:

July 1, Democracy Day - On which we reflect upon the principles of (small-“d”) democracy; July 2, Republic Day - On which we reflect upon the principles of (small-“r”) republicanism; July 3, Constitution Day - On which we reflect upon both Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law; July 4, Independence Day - On which we celebrate our sovereignty and self-rule; July 5, Interdependence Day - On which acknowledge our postion as one nation among many; July 6, Pluribus Day - On which we recognize the role of the States; July 7, Union Day - On which we recognize the role of the Federation.

Or something along those lines. It would also be nice to have some sort of “America the Beautiful” day, on which we acknowledge our natural wonders and resources and so on. This is just a rough draft…

Whichever of these days falls on a Monday would be the only Legal Holiday with office closures, parades, fireworks, and so on, but there can be more to the “True Meaning” of July 4 than mere recognition of our successful break from British Rule.
