You’re a nerd, Dean. I’m not convinced that you can stay neutral in a debate over whether or not graphic novels are literature.

It all depends on how much authority Mr. Burgess has in setting his curriculum and assignments. If it’s completely up to him and he says no graphic novels, then that’s the end of it. Just go read a book.

So read a book and make the diorama a graphic novel of it.

Buy another copy of the graphic novel, then black out the pictures and do a diorama of that. Display the blacked-out book in the diorama as protest over the teacher’s policy.

Heart just loves drama, so she seems to seek it out: a real little Drama Queen.

This series came the day I was presenting “How to use Graphic Novels and Comics to Teach” with my future teachers. I added the last two days from “Heart” into the slides (with attribution and shout outs to GoComics, of course) to show how librarians and teachers are grappling with this issue. Graphic novels such as “Maus” which depict the Holocaust, and “March” which describe the life of John Lewis during the Civil Rights battle in the 60’s are outstanding examples of how graphic novels are equivalent and for some students BETTER, than traditional books in bringing history alive for them. THANK YOU MARK for bringing up this topic!

I’ve seen thick graphic novels with more words than some thin books that were accepted for book reports.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” Think about how many paragraphs would be required to accurately describe an intricately detailed outfit that can be conveyed in just one panel of a comic book.

Heart is about to learn experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.

Out of spite, I’d look for the smallest book possible that has awful reviews and make a diarrhea of that instead.
