At all (okay, both) primary schools I attended, ordinary lost & found was held for 6 months, then got sold off in a silent auction. Valuable lost & found were typically held until for a year, though those rarely went unclaimed. My local bookstore does that. Random (presumably poorly selling) books bought sight unseen in a brown paper bag.
