This sort of assignment is fraught with danger, for the reason illustrated here. Kids shouldn’t be asked to do assignments which might lead to shaming them in front of other kids based on social status. At our school we had a well-meaning 4th grade teacher ask kids to do a presentation on the history of their surnames which was extremely unpleasant for some of the kids who learned it was originally the name of the plantation owner who enslaved their ancestors. I still remember one girl crying in front of the class. Even at that age I knew the teacher did wrong.
