I know a cat that when she hears the food bowl lifted turns into a circus kitty. She gets up on her hind legs and walks around on them batting at the bowl until it’s set down. She takes her feedings seriously like Heathcliff.
All we had to do was tap on the top of a can or rattle a box of food & our cats would do the same thing,. Heaven help you if you were in they’re way.
My friend’s cats knew in which shelf in the kitchen closet the catfood was kept. The were able to open the door, but not to reach high enough from the counter below to get the cans out. Instead, they used their wits: one of them would pace back and forth meowing loudly and urgently, while the other would find an empty pot on the counter and would roll it back and forth making a tremendous noise.
The only reason this technique might not work was if she or her husband thought the cats had already had enough to eat for the day. In my experience, pets never think this. So there was always a bit of a battle.
