Yes, forget the little girl from the trailer park with the country music twang that always sings for the Red Wings home games. (Double that if a Canadian team is in town and “Oh Canada” gets the Nashville interpritation) I would rather have the barber shop quartet that flies through the thing at breakneck speed.

    At least they didn’t say é, è, ê, ë, ē, ė, ę, ě, ȇ, ȩ, ə, ɘ, ᶒ, ḕ, ḙ, ḛ, ḝ, or ẽ

I agree with Herb – it’s just plain disrespectful.

I can’t stand singers who insist on adding unnecessary (and too often pathetic) ruffles and flourishes to the national anthem. The singer’s ego trip is not why the song is sung. It’s hard enough to sing; leave it be, you bloody narcissists!

As far as I’m concerned, the Star Spangled Banner is our true national anthem. It would also help if we sang all four verses instead of just the first one.

The National Anthem is barely older than I am. The military forced it to be adopted in 1932. Before that, it was mainly associated with the military, not the nation (witness its use in Madame Butterfly). Before that, Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean was the unofficial anthem, and to start out, the tune was Chester, with various lyrics.
