I can’t remember the name of the story or the author.
There’s a long second person narration where “you” goes on a fantastic adventure fighting evil Rustons. At the end of the story we switch to thrid person, and find out that “you” is a young man living in a decadent future. Everyone is so lethargic that they have to be pumped full of drugs and fed virtual reality games to get them to do basic maintenance like cleaning rust off the machines that keep them alive.
