I once worked for a place where part of our job was running tests using large (200+ hp) electric motors. Most of them were tested inside explosion proof rooms, but due to a crush of work, one was located in the middle of our regular lab. Sure enough, the safety officer insisted we wear our safety glasses. I tried to point out that if that motor let go, our eyes would be the least of our worries. Didn’t help. I made it a point to not be there whenever that motor was running. Luckily, one of the special labs opened up, and the motor was moved before anyone was hurt.
