I used to teach at a small university in Texas. At one point, the administration decided the faculty should line up in full academic regalia and applaud the incoming freshman class as went to some sort of orientation speech. (“Congratulations! Your check cleared!”) I always thought it would have been more like a real tradition if we had thrown water balloons at them instead. Believe me, in the heat of late August in Texas, a water balloon would not have been unwelcome! Then, to be fair, they should pelt the faculty with water balloons when they recede at the graduation ceremony.
