The ELT is a hardened radio, Any landing that the people can walk away from wouldn’t phase the ELT. Of course the landing gear had no business snapping where it did (see last week). Let’s face it, that plane wasn’t airworthy to begin with.
There should be an ELT mounted in the aft fuselage of the aircraft. You don’t depend on a portable unit. Even if it didn’t activate in the hard landing, it can be switched on manually.
Shelter can wait a bit. Construct some way to capture as much rainwater as possible. Even as simple as tying beach towels to have them soak up the water, or fashion a drip tarp.
I have to wonder how they survived if the ELT didn’t? I’ve heard of crashes that tore the plane to pieces and the wrecks were only found because the ELT was still functioning
