If a kid is unable to do homework on his own, it should never have been assigned in the first place.

Sometimes kids need one-on-one tutoring to understand how to do their homework. They don’t get that in the classroom. If they have a question about something early on in the teacher’s explanation, and they’re shy about asking (or have been told not to interrupt), they don’t understand anything that comes afterward. With one-on-one, they can ask questions when they need to.

Elementary school kids are not always self-directed enough to finish their homework alone. I’ve seen my daughter stare at a blank piece of paper for half an hour. Then I sit next to her and ask a couple of questions and the whole thing is finished in 5 minutes. Sometimes it takes a parent sitting with a kid to provide focus.
