True police story from the ’eighties:

Midnight shift, Christmas morning, started off with an elderly woman getting hit and killed by a bus as she left midnight mass.

Later in the shift a young man named Chester, despondent on Christmas after his girl friend broke up with him, parked in front of her house, emptied a can of gasoline on his lap and struck a match.

At end of watch a female officer commented, “It was a musical Christmas: first ‘Grandma got run over by a Greyhound,’ then ’Chet’s nuts roasting on an open fire.’”

This sounds very much like the last Christmas I worked at Blue Cross of Maryland. No parties because they were a waste of time, and “we just had the entire building recarpeted”. Bah, humbug.

The Ghost of Christmas Past was not ghoulish and drag chains. The chain dragger was the ghost of Jacob Marley. The Ghoulish one was the Ghost of Christmas Future.
