Bug Blog by Cuco Rocha Hard Percent 36% of whites in the US will get a college education. 18% of blacks and 12% of Latinos will. Americans are calling for an end to Affirmative Action, mainly because they can't do math.
First, there has to be a culture of education in one’s family/friends circle…then there has to be someone who is willing to invest in that person’s education. Peer pressure, I think, has a lot to do with how a someone looks at a college education. As far as percentages go, there are 64% of whites that either do not go to college or drop out…this number represents a lot of people (just for comparison). Lalo, how would you encourage young Latinos that they really need to get a college education? ;)
Affirmative action based on race assumes that all minorities need help. That simply isn’t the case. Affirmative action should be based on economic status. The son of a waitress needs help a lot more than Sasha and Malia do.
Probably because unlike the U.S.,with a thoroughly diverse population, other countries/continents are homogenous, therefore lacking the need for such programs.
What does “college is not right for everyone” have to do with the subject of the strip, unless you are suggesting that blacks and latinos are just not smart enough for college, or more suitable for sports or gardening?…
These statistics are not very meaningful. How many blacks and latinos that want to go to college and actually apply don’t get in? How many persons of color that benefitted from affirmative action and got into prestigious universities were from underprivileged backgrounds? How does that compare to the admission of white persons from such backgrounds?

Lalo’s consistant, heavy on emotion but no solutions, constructive comment or humor.

Those who call for an end to don’t understand how it works.
