Hmm. Without knowing the back story, I can see why the original might seem more frightening. As I remember—-it’s been some years since I read the story—-the girl’s father died. And that’s a friend of her father (whom she develops a crush on) who is trying to comfort her. On second thought, that is pretty creepy.
