Sounds like a good story line for a sitcom…..

Sounds like the married man “story” to me.

Texas has a statute saying if you get married while you’re still married to someone else, the second marriage kicks in whenever the first marriage is dissolved (by divorce, death of the other spouse, or annulment). I couldn’t believe it until I looked it up and read the statute myself. I call it the “Bigamy Enabling Law.”

I don’t understand the last sentence. Marriages in Mexico are valid marriages. So why would you need an annulment less than if you married in the USA?

I’m doubtless wrong, but to me this has the feel of being autobiographic.

What happened to the marriage with Stu?

Does Allen know about the tattoo?

I had a friend who told me that her divorce had been a nightmare. She had told her lawyer that she just wanted out, and didn’t want to make demands. On her ex’s part, he (for instance) gave her the car, but not the “pink slip” she could use to register it. All in all, she told me, her ex put up roadblocks and unreasonable demands.

She later told me that she had had a call from “the other woman,” who had been betrayed (adultery) in the same way that my friend had been. After the “He’s no good” story, the other woman added, “I think that we could have made a happy marriage if you hadn’t been so difficult about the divorce, with the unreasonable demands,” which floored my friend.

My theory is that either or both of the lawyers had had, early in their careers, divorce clients who told them “All I want is out, no demands,” followed instructions, and then were hit with “What do you mean I didn’t get the dog? the house? lotsa alimony? You failed me and I’ll take you to the Bar Association for malpractice!” Having learned their lessons (again my theory) the lawyers decided that, despite what their clients instructed them, they would never again go easy on the other side.

Did he ever get the divorce? Did you ever get married? Inquiring minds want to know!

In the case of my own still-married-to-someone-else “husband”, when he traded me in for a blonde in a red sportscar, the non-legal nature of our marriage did make it a lot easier to clean up the mess.

I love the variety of storytelling—here a little ‘American Splendor’, the next’s a B. Kliban Operetta. Keep ’em coming, please!
