Last year I had a moose run right next to me when walking my dog. Fortunately, she was more interested in the dog than me, and turned just before running over me. It was so close, I was amazed how much that animal stank.
On Thanksgiving we take our dogs to the forest preserve for romps in the early afternoon. One day it had turned foggy and we were just approaching our car to leave when suddenly a large-racked male elk emerged, stalking only a few yards from us. In the fog it was like seeing the Queen Mary suddenly hove into view. I was worried our dogs would upset him, but they were silent and he paid us no never-mind. He obviously, um, had his mind on other things, given the time of year. And no, he didn’t make a sound as he passed.
