This part of the story IS especially hard to take. I’m glad that in our dog pounds they don’t put dogs down anymore. They find foster homes and other pounds to put them in unless they’re to sick or hurt to survive. I hope it’s that way elsewhere too.
I made a promise to my wife, that I would NOT send my dog to the shelter. She said that when I told her this, I was the angriest she ever saw me. Well, it did, indeed, become necessary. I brought him to the vet, made the arrangements and held him in my arms while they gave him the anethstetic to calm him. I petted him for 5 minutes, the nodded for the vet to inject the potassium. It was painless and instantaneous. I was in a killing mood after that, but I calmed down. Not a day goes by I don’t think of that; I haven’t stopped grieving over that….
