And he knows it. My pacifist dad went to a recruiting station and signed up after Pearl Harbor. They commissioned him a 2d Lt. and put him right back in the lab, where he stayed for the duration of the war (and until his death a generation later; but I’m getting ahead of myself). I asked him why he, as a pacifist (and someone already past draft age), went and volunteered for the military. “There was a war on,” he said matter-of-factly, “I figured FDR knew better than I did where I needed to be.”
