A friend of mine (a submariner not sub-mariner) told me that there are two kinds of vessels: submarines and targets.

This is akin to the difference between mechanical and civil engineers. Mechanical engineers build weapons; civil engineers build targets.
Should have put on a flotation device.
Toured a submarine once. The enlisted bunks were on the lowest level, the middle had the chiefs (chief petty officers) and the officers, and the captain had stateroom on upper level.
That is illogical, Captain.
Adjust ballast.
